Useful Lake Tips and Methods

The lake varies in depths and can be fished from any of the 3 banks.

The swims closest to you when approaching the lake from the double white gate are man made swims; the depths vary from the summer months to the winter months.

The depth is anything from 2ft to 3ft in the winter and this would normally drop down to about 2ft in the summer.

In the middle of the lake it drops off slightly deeper as this originated from 2 streams back in the 15th century, this lake is still fed by 2 streams all year round from our top lake, which is unfortunately out of bounds for fishing, due to this being a breeding and stock lake.

As you go around the lake going down towards your right hand side facing the lake it starts to get deeper to depths of 4ft to 6ft in the middle and around 2ft in the edge.

Down on the dam wall end near the monk (this is the brick and metal square in the water) this is where the deeper water is, in places it goes down to 10ft this has some holes around the corner to half way up the far bank going to depths around 12ft.

There are very minimal snags in the lake, in fact there are none that we are aware of but branches etc do find there way in to the lake at some stage.

Float Rod Fishing tips and methods

Fishing a match rod with the waggler float or a similar float, 3lb to 4lb line is recommended at all times, barbless hooks from size 14 to size 20. Never leave your road unattended as these fish in the lake are very powerful fish even the 2lb fish give you a run for your money. It proves to do very well, fishing 2 rod lengths out or out at a distance, a 4bb float dotted down with a minimum of the top of the float showing gives you early warning or indication of your bites.

Recommended Baits and Feeding patterns

Hook baits that work well and produce fish from the smaller fish, or to the 25lb Carp, or the larger Chub, Roach or Tench.

Sweet corn on its own or tipped with maggot, maggot on its own, paste, pellet, bread, worm or caster.

For feeding use 3 to 4mm pellet, hemp caster, sweet corn or maggot, you can use ground baits of your choice but the lake always seems to have colour and natural feed in it anyway.

Every cast or every second cast sprinkle out a small hand full of pellet if you are using sweet corn add a couple of grains of corn in with the pellet, this always works well and can produce you good bags of fish.

When using maggot every cast spray maggot as a loose feed or every other cast, this produces good bags of fish.

Fishing the pole

We recommend that you use a heavy elastic, if not you will be disappointed and during the day you will be forever setting up after loosing lots of tackle.

Paste, pellet, maggot or corn works very well, be prepared to have a break when using the pole, pole fishing gives excellent bags of fish and the bigger fish will home in when using the pole. The size of elastic recommended is size 12 to 14.
